Publication Ethics Statement

The Oakwood University OUScholars Journal is committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and ethical conduct in scholarly publishing. The Journal follows accepted international principles of publication ethics and expects all participants in the publication process—including authors, editors, reviewers, and the publisher—to uphold these standards. The Journal seeks to foster a culture of academic excellence, honesty, fairness, and respect for intellectual property.
1. Responsibilities of Authors
Authors submitting manuscripts to the OUScholars Journal are expected to:
• Submit original work that has not been previously published or is not under consideration by another publication.
• Accurately present research methods, data, analyses, and findings without fabrication, falsification, or inappropriate manipulation.
• Properly acknowledge the work and ideas of others through appropriate citation and referencing.
• Ensure that all individuals listed as authors have made substantial scholarly contributions to the work and approve the final manuscript before submission.
• Disclose any financial, institutional, or personal conflicts of interest that could influence the research or its interpretation.
• Obtain all necessary approvals for research involving human participants, animals, or other regulated subjects, including approval from the appropriate Institutional Review Board (IRB) or ethics committee when applicable.
• Promptly notify the editorial office if a significant error or omission is discovered after submission or publication and cooperate in correcting or retracting the work if necessary.
2. Responsibilities of Editors
Editors are responsible for ensuring a fair, objective, and timely review process. Editors will:
• Evaluate manuscripts solely on their scholarly merit, originality, significance, methodological rigor, and relevance to the Journal's scope.
• Make editorial decisions without discrimination based on race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, gender, institutional affiliation, political beliefs, or personal characteristics.
• Maintain the confidentiality of submitted manuscripts and reviewer identities when applicable.
• Avoid conflicts of interest and recuse themselves from handling manuscripts when impartiality could reasonably be questioned.
• Address allegations of research misconduct, plagiarism, duplicate publication, or unethical research practices in accordance with established academic publishing standards.
• Publish corrections, retractions, or expressions of concern when warranted to preserve the integrity of the scholarly record.
3. Responsibilities of Peer Reviewers
Peer reviewers play a critical role in maintaining the quality of published scholarship. Reviewers are expected to:
• Provide objective, constructive, and evidence-based evaluations.
• Treat all manuscripts as confidential documents.
• Complete reviews within the agreed timeframe or promptly decline invitations when unable to do so.
• Identify relevant published work not cited by the authors when appropriate.
• Alert the editors to suspected plagiarism, duplicate publication, ethical concerns, or significant similarities with other known works.
• Decline to review manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest arising from competitive, collaborative, financial, or personal relationships.
4. Research Integrity
The OUScholars Journal does not tolerate research misconduct, including but not limited to:
• Plagiarism
• Self-plagiarism or redundant publication
• Data fabrication or falsification
• Image manipulation that misrepresents research findings
• Improper authorship attribution
• Citation manipulation
• Undisclosed conflicts of interest
Allegations of misconduct will be investigated carefully and fairly. When misconduct is confirmed, the Journal may reject the manuscript, retract published articles, notify authors' institutions or funding agencies when appropriate, and take additional corrective actions.
5. Plagiarism Screening
Submitted manuscripts may be evaluated using plagiarism-detection software. Manuscripts found to contain substantial plagiarism, duplicate publication, or improperly attributed material may be rejected before peer review or withdrawn from publication if discovered later.
6. Conflicts of Interest
Authors, editors, and reviewers must disclose any relationships or circumstances that could reasonably be perceived as influencing their judgment. Disclosure enables editors to make informed decisions regarding manuscript handling and publication.
7. Human Subjects and Animal Research
Research involving human participants must comply with recognized ethical principles, including informed consent, participant privacy, and applicable institutional and governmental regulations. Research involving animals must adhere to accepted standards of humane care and use and receive appropriate institutional approval.
Authors should include statements describing ethical approval and informed consent where applicable.
8. Corrections and Retractions
The Journal is committed to maintaining the accuracy of the scholarly record. When significant errors are identified, the Journal will publish corrections, corrigenda, expressions of concern, or retractions as appropriate. Retractions will clearly identify the reasons for the action while preserving the integrity of the publication record.
9. Intellectual Property and Copyright
Authors are responsible for ensuring that all copyrighted material used within their manuscripts is properly licensed or used with permission where required. Proper acknowledgment of all sources is expected.
10. Editorial Independence
Editorial decisions are made independently of external influence, including institutional, financial, political, or commercial interests. Acceptance or rejection of manuscripts is based exclusively on scholarly merit and the Journal's editorial standards.
11. Commitment to Ethical Scholarship
The OUScholars Journal is dedicated to advancing high-quality scholarship that reflects integrity, intellectual honesty, and respect for the academic community. By submitting a manuscript, authors affirm that they understand and agree to abide by this Publication Ethics Statement. Editors and reviewers likewise commit to upholding these ethical principles throughout the publication process.
The Journal reserves the right to revise this Publication Ethics Statement periodically to reflect evolving best practices in scholarly publishing and research ethics.
