Description
The C1s enzyme is part of the immune system and helps the body fight infections and kill infected cells. But when it does not work properly, it harms more than it protects. The C1s enzyme has been linked to gum disease and heart disease, and under some conditions, degrades connective tissues, resulting in loose gums and early tooth loss. Studies of patients with pEDS reveal that their tissue decays much quicker than normal, and even a low-grade fever worsens symptoms. pEDS is not merely a gum disease—it is a disease in which C1s destroys the body's ability to produce strong connective tissue. This suggests that blocking C1s may prevent severe gum disease and early tooth loss in pEDS patients. While C1s is required for tissue strength, its overactivity leads to serious disease. In pEDS, excessive C1s destroys collagen, causing weak gums and aggressive periodontal disease. Individuals with pEDS struggle to maintain healthy gums since C1s continuously degrades their collagen. This discovery is important because blocking C1s can help prevent gum disease in pEDS individuals. As scientists learn more about how C1s affects connective tissues, they can develop new treatments to protect against gum disease and premature tooth loss, improving both oral health and general well being.
